// FGST - Forest Graphical Simulation Tool

'FGST' stands for Forest Graphical Simulation Tool. It is an application that allows you to generate an environment and simulate plant populations growth in it.
The idea came from my fascination with how people read the landscape and my investigation into forest ecosystem simulation in the French scientific community.
Since that there was no way to figure out what was the tangible changes those scientists were talking about, i thought that it would be useful and didactic to create a tool that allows
everyone to explore their way of reading forest landscape. It allows you to model a simulation by choosing variables such as species distributions, density, latitude etc.
With the output staitstics and 3d rendering, it allows the user to understand further forestry choices and the impact of climate changes.
One of the other interests that i will try to develop in the future is to allow the user to take control of the variables of the environment,
(not only the forest variables) and link them to external inputs or projects by hardware or software. Therefore, anyone with an artistic approach can create generative artwork linking forest
3d growth and sound for example or even performance.

The project uses the OpenGL API to communicate with the GPU and the ImGUI library to create the GUI.
Currently, the software includes a 3D viewport controlled by a speculative ecological simulation component.
The features are for now :
- Very basics Phong lightings.
- Two modes : the edit mode and the game mode. It basically changes the way of controlling the camera.
- Two graphic modes : Line mode and Polygon mode.
- A simulation editor.
The logic behind the tree growth is based on a repetition of a Stem object that represents the single reproductive unit of a plant (the phytomer).
Then those stems are live rendered and are driven by an apical meristematic growth before being split according to an architectural development class containing the rules. This way, everyone
can create their own architecture classes. Those i am working on are inspired by Francis Hallé's research on tree architectures knowing Massart and Leeuwenberg models.
It is similar to an L-system result but it is coded to allow a good amount of stochastic in the future.

This project is an attempt to seriously try to find a logic behind the mysterious intricate patterns of wood-boring insects in spruce trees.
Perhaps the solution regarding the deadly human behaviour towards the environment is inscribed in this insect language.
Nowadays, European spruce trees are dying because of weakness and climate change. Therefore Ips Typographus, a species of wood-boring beetle, knows an exponential population growth.
The machine's aim is to read a spruce log that has been colonised by Ips Typographus and try to interpret a sentence within the pattern of the galleries.
It is composed of multiple hardware parts and a software algorithm written in python.
It is essentially a rail with a camera controlled by a servo motor. The image of the wood is then treated and analysed by an algorithm
to decode a readable message printed on a hacked thermal printer.
The current development goal is to program virtual insects with programmed capabilities that can retrieve the correct path of the real insect by navigating through the camera feedback.
It will be like a programmed turtle that imitates real wood-boring insects.

Tiennet and Huriel, the main characters of ''Les maîtres sonneurs'' wrote in 1853 by George Sand, Farm Simulator 2011 online.
Tiennet is making crop circles in his field with his tractor while Huriel challenge him to leave the field life to settle down in the forest.

This project was a first attempt to create an automated programmed installation. Tiennet's tractor was programmed with L-systems.
Huriel is sending him his monolog of the book live on the server. Both bots have been programmed in python with pyAutoGUI library.

This film is an investigation into junior single-seated car racing in Germany, the Hockenheimring circuit and the tragic death of Jim Clark,
a famous F1 pilot in the 60s. I asked myself what relationship pilots have with death and i tried to give an answer using fiction. A particular
importance to a pilot's death signified for me the end of an already buried practice that is struggling to stay alive. A practice that
became alone against the world like a depressive and alcoholic magician with no clients in a motorised countryside.

This 3d animation short film explores the concept of artefact and the spiritual value we can confer to some objects through an absurd narrative.

This documentary project is an investigation of the Slovakian primary forest seen through the eyes of those who work within those places.
It follows Michal, Dominick and Peter, a team of scientists from the Forest Ecology Centre of Zvolen. They study old-growth forest plots reaction to climate change.
It attempts to capture the way those scientists read this very particular landscape. It attempt to show the importance of the knowledge we can extract from the sylvigenesis process
for our modern ways of working with forests.

Starting from the idea of photobooth, this installation is also a kind of
Trojan horse used to spam big french production companies. Thanks to a python-programmed software, spectators can take a picture of themselves in unusual places like
parking lots or landfills. All of the pictures and names feed a gigantic recommendation letter to promote Enzo Pernet's latest movie script. The idea is to show the
contrast between the production of a film from the industry and from the visual art community.
